This is a simple, fun activity to do with pupils which came up to me thanks to my students’… annoyance at common homework!
There was a textbook assignment reading “Write about what you do during each day of the week” which was dully received by my Grade E pupils. Then someone asked: “Should we write absolutely true facts about us?” Just then it struck me and I challenged them: “Not at all. In fact you should write absolutely untrue, weird things about your habits. Whoever writes anything sensible will get punished!” Why not, I thought, it’s carnival time!
That was it! Beautiful, funny, imaginative sentences were handed in the next day, which I had a great time checking! They definitely deserved extra recognition and display, so I thought of designing some “canvas”, have my pupils actually draw their favourite weird habit and then bind everything into a nice booklet. The whole activity took place on the last Friday before Monday of Lent holiday and it so much suited the festive carnival spirit. The final outcome entertained the whole class so greatly that they suggested handing their booklet around the school for everyone to read.
You can find the canvas together with the booklet cover below (click on the pdf image). I designed two different covers; one for a carnival time activity (wait until the next year) and a neutral one which can be easily incorporated in lessons anytime. If you happen to like this activity, please remember to say a good word about this site!
