18 July, Nelson Mandela Day
This present day is dedicated by the U.N. to an acclaimed world leader of justice and equality.
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela , born on 18 july 1918, is a South-African Civil Rights Activist, journalist, lawyer and politician who was actively involved in the anti-apartheid movement in his 20s. During his life he was repeatedly arrested for his protesting activities until he was brought to trial again in 1963. This time, he and 10 other ANC (the political party he supported) leaders were sentenced to life imprisonment for political offenses, including sabotage. Mandela served 27 years in prison and he was finally granted release in 1990, after a long-standing international campaign. Later, he was elected and served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the first black South African to hold the office. In 1993 he gained the Nobel Peace Prize. Nelson Mandela is 95 today.
