The theremin (originally known as the ætherphone) is an electronic musical instrument controlled without physical contact by the thereminist (performer).

A purely melodic instrument of the electronic family typically played by moving the right hand between two projecting electrodes with the left hand controlling dynamics and articulation.

It is named after its inventor, Leon Theremin, who patented the device in 1928.

“Over the Rainbow” is a ballad by Harold Arlen with lyrics by Yip Harburg. It was written for the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, in which it was sung by actress Judy Garland.

The sound of the instrument is often associated with eerie situations.
