MODALS:
1. Τα πιο κοινά Modal (auxiliary) Verbs:
Can –μπορώ, Could – θα μπορούσα, May –μπορώ, δύναμαι, επιτρέπεται, ενδέχεται, Might-may/could, Must –πρέπει, Ought to-έπρεπε να, Shall –θα, Should –πρέπει, Will –θα, Would –θα (παρελθόν)
Notice: had better, have to, and have got to είναι εκφράσεις που συνδέονται στενά με τα modals και συχνά εναλλάσσονται μ’αυτά.
2. Χαρακτηριστικά των modals:
• Έχουν την ίδια μορφή, χωρίς κανενός είδους κατάληξη, σε όλα τα πρόσωπα
• Ακολουθούνται πάντα από ένα bare infinitive= απαρέμφατο χωρίς το ‘to’ (γυμνό).
• Στις ερωτήσεις τα βάζουμε πρώτα στην πρόταση και στις αρνήσεις απλά προσθέτουμε ένα ‘not’
• Δεν έχουν όλους τους χρόνους
3. Σύνταξη:
CAN/COULD
• I can ride a horse. ability (ικανότητα)
• We can stay with my brother when we are in Paris. opportunity (ευκαιρία)
• She cannot stay out after 10 PM. permission (άδεια)
• Can you hand me the stapler? request (παράκληση)
• Any child can grow up to be president. possibility (πιθανότητα)
