Schools in Greece and the UK
6th graders write about the differences and similarities between schools in the two countries. Their assignment was to write a blog post, so here are the most successful attempts. Enjoy!

“Hello everybody and welcome to the blog wihtout a name! Today, we will compare the schools in the UK and Greece.
In the UK, students go to school later but they finish school later too! School starts at 8.50 and ends at 15.15. Every lesson takes one hour. They wear school uniforms too! School uniforms are great because the students don’t feel bad about their clothes or make other students feel bad, so it’s great. OK, I think we are done with UK schools.
Let’s talk now about Greek schools. In Greece, school starts at 8.15 and ends at 1.15, but some students stay longer and go home at 4 o’clock. Every lesson takes 45 minutes so instead of three lessons Greek schools have six lessons. In Greece, students don’t wear a school uniform, they wear their normal clothes.

“Hello! In my previous post you had asked me to write all the differences between schools in Britain and in Greece. Well, in my opinion, the biggest difference is in the time they start. In Britain, school starts at nine o’clock and finishes at five o’clock. In Britain, they only have three sessions that last 60 minutes. In Greece, we have 6 sessions that last 45 minutes.
One big difference is that they have lunch from their school canteen. In Greece, we take our lunch from home. If you ask me, I prefer our way because we know exactly what we’re eating. Anyway, another difference is that they have assembly, but we tell prayers. In Britain, they all wear the same outfit but in Greece we wear what we want every day. I prefer the second one but on the other hand Britain has a good method too, because children can’t be jealous of the others.

Αγαπημένοι και αγαπημένες μου, καλώς ήρθατε σε άλλη μια χρονιά στην Αίθουσα 9. Ή, όπως ξεκινάμε κάθε μάθημα με τα παιδιά, Hello everybody! Welcome to the English class! Σε αυτό το ποστ θα προσπαθήσω να σας εξηγήσω κάποια γενικά πράγματα όσον αφορά στο πώς θα δουλέψουμε φέτος και τις βασικές διαφορές από την τρίτη τάξη. Ας αρχίσουμε!
Η τετάρτη είναι γενικά μια πιο εύκολη τάξη. Εύκολη με την έννοια ότι τα παιδιά συνήθισαν πια στην αλλαγή από τις τάξεις junior, που λέω κι εγώ, συνήθισαν στα διαφορετικά αντικείμενα, στο πιο πολύπλοκο πρόγραμμα και έχουν μάθει να οργανώνονται πολύ καλά. Αρχικά, λοιπόν, χτίζουμε πάνω σε αυτές τις δεξιότητες που αποκτήθηκαν (με τόσο κόπο!) πέρυσι και η αλήθεια είναι, εδώ και ένα μήνα περίπου που δουλεύουμε, τα πράγματα σε αυτόν τον τομέα έχουν εξελιχθεί αρκετά καλά. Προκειμένου όμως να κρατήσουμε το ενδιαφέρον ζωντανό αλλά και να καλλιεργήσουμε τις πιο προηγμένες δεξιότητες που θα μας χρειαστούν παρακάτω, έχουν γίνει κάποιες αλλαγές τόσο στο γνωστικό αντικείμενο όσο και στη διαδικασία του μαθήματος.
Πρώτα απ’ όλα, ίσως έχετε ήδη μάθει ότι φέτος συναγωνιζόμαστε σε ομάδες σε μεγάλο κομμάτι του μαθήματος. Οι ομάδες αυτές αγωνίζονται να κερδίσουν πόντους κάθε τόσο με τις επιδόσεις τους, όσο και με άλλους τρόπους, όπως η ησυχία, η συνεργασία, η συμμετοχή και η συνέπεια στο homework. Οι πόντοι που κερδίζονται κάθε μέρα προστίθενται και καταγράφονται σε ένα scoreboard και στο τέλος του τριμήνου τα μέλη της ομάδας με τους περισσότερους πόντους θα κερδίσουν ένα συμβολικό δωράκι από τον Teacher. Αμέσως μετά, στην αρχή του επόμενου τριμήνου οι ομάδες θα ανακατευτούν και θα ξεκινήσουμε από το μηδέν. Με αυτόν τον τρόπο, επιδιώκεται να αναπτύξουν τα παιδιά πνεύμα συνεργασίας και αλληλοβοήθειας, να μάθουν να συνεργάζονται με όλους αλλά και να αποκτήσουν ένα παραπάνω κίνητρο να τα πάνε “καλά” στο μάθημα. Διάφορα καινούρια “κόλπα” έχουν κάνει την εμφάνισή τους στο μάθημα, όπως τα κουτιά των μυστικών αποστολών, το “κουίζ της Δευτέρας”, το παιχνίδι των ερωτήσεων κάθε φορά που έχουμε καινούριο κείμενο και άλλα.
Παράλληλα, το μάθημα προσαρμόζεται στα νέα δεδομένα και ο φόρτος των παιδιών μέσα στη βδομάδα επιχειρείται να ελαφρυνθεί όσο γίνεται περισσότερο. Γι’ αυτό και διαλέγω ένα αντικείμενο να δουλέψουμε κάθε βδομάδα και δίνω ελάχιστη δουλειά από μέρα σε μέρα. Ο σκοπός είναι να γίνει ανακεφαλαίωση στο τέλος της βδομάδας και να εμπεδωθεί καλύτερα το αντικείμενο όταν θα υπάρχει περισσότερος χρόνος και ευελιξία να διαλέξει το κάθε παιδί (και γονιός!) πότε και πώς θέλει να δουλέψει. Κοινώς, έχουμε κοινό στόχο αλλά διαφορετικούς δρόμους. Σε αυτό μας βοηθάει και φέτος το e-class. Στην ηλεκτρονική μας τάξη ανεβαίνουν στο τέλος της εβδομάδας όλα όσα μάθαμε σε λεξιλόγιο και γραμματική μαζί με σετ στο Quizlet, τις σημειώσεις στον πίνακα, βίντεο ή τραγούδια και διαδραστικά παιχνίδια. Κάθε παιδί μπορεί να επιλέξει πόσο και πώς θα δουλέψει ώστε να είναι έτοιμο για το κουίζ της Δευτέρας και παρακάτω, για το επαναληπτικό τεστ.
Ο απόλυτος οδηγός μας παραμένει το τετράδιο. Εκεί φαίνεται τι έχουμε δουλέψει κάθε φορά και προσπαθούμε να γράφουμε και τη δουλειά για το σπίτι για να μην την ξεχάσουμε. Το τετράδιο φέτος ζωντανεύει ακόμα περισσότερο, γίνεται ακόμα πιο διαδραστικό για να συνοδέψει το μάθημα και να διευκολύνει όλους τους διαφορετικούς τρόπους μάθησης. Μια που φέτος εισάγεται και η διδασκαλία της γραμματικής κανονικά πλέον, είναι σημαντικό εργαλείο. Μια υπενθύμιση: πέρυσι ο βασικός μας στόχος ήταν να κατακτήσουμε την αποκωδικοποίηση ήχου και γραμμάτων και την σωστή ορθογραφία. Φέτος, θεωρούμε ότι το καταφέραμε οπότε δεν υπάρχει πια αντιγραφή. Όμως είναι προφανές ότι θέλουμε να μάθουμε πώς γράφονται οι λέξεις που μαθαίνουμε, οπότε καλό είναι στο τέλος της βδομάδας, πέρα από το Quizlet, να ελέγχουμε και να γράφονται οι λέξεις μερικές φορές σε ένα πρόχειρο.
Ένα άλλο πράγμα που μας ενδιαφέρει φέτος είναι να βάλουμε τις βάσεις για το writing, μια από τις πιο απαιτητικές δεξιότητες που έχουμε να κατακτήσουμε. Οι περισσότερες εργασίες που συμπεριλαμβάνουν δημιουργική γραφή είναι προγραμματισμένες να γίνουν μέσα στην τάξη, αλλά αν χρειαστεί να το κάνουν στο σπίτι, μην ξεχνάτε ότι ό,τι χρειάζονται θα το έχω δουλέψει και ο σκοπός είναι να αναμετρηθούν με τον εαυτό τους και να παράξουν το καλύτερο που μπορούν.
Τελειώνοντας, θα ήθελα να εξηγήσω λίγα πράγματα για το βιβλίο γιατί είναι μια σημαντική διαφοροποίηση σε σχέση με πέρυσι. Το βιβλίο μας φέτος είναι αρκετά παλιότερο και, σε πολλά σημεία, όχι και τόσο καλογραμμένο. Γι’ αυτό και το χρησιμοποιώ σαν αφετηρία και αφορμή για να επιλέξω τις θεματικές, αλλά σε καμία περίπτωση δεν δουλεύεται εξαντλητικά. Το ίδιο ισχύει και για το workbook. Κάθε τι που δουλεύουμε θα έχει ημερομηνία γραμμένη στην κορυφή της σελίδας, αλλά, ξαναλέω, ο βασικός οδηγός μας είναι το τετράδιο. Παράλληλα, μεγάλο κομμάτι της δουλειάς θα βρίσκεται στο φάκελο (π.χ. η γραμματική). Κυρίως μας ενδιαφέρουν τα κείμενα και το λεξιλόγιο από το βιβλίο και πολύ επιλεγμένες ασκήσεις. Πάντως, όταν ελέγχετε, σιγουρευτείτε ότι οι ασκήσεις που είναι κυκλωμένες έχουν γίνει. Στο τέλος κάθε κεφαλαίου θα έχουμε επανάληψη και τεστ για να τσεκάρουμε ότι προχωράμε σωστά και δεν αφήνουμε κενά. Με βάση την προηγούμενη εμπειρία μου, υπολογίζω ότι θα φτάσουμε μέχρι το πρώτο μέρος του κεφαλαίου 8 συνολικά.

Unit 2, Lesson 1 – Grammar notes
This is my school!
Younger kids are highly enthusiastic when asked to produce. This is a plain fact. I’ve always said: “Ask little of the kids, they’ll bring you less. Ask a lot and they’ll blow you away!” And my little critters have proven me right time and again. This is the first time my 4th graders were asked to produce text. It was in the form of a decorated poster, but little did they realize that while trying to win a “Top Artist” badge, they were actually putting everything we learnt in Unit 1 to good use. They mostly did an amazing job, and the most amazing was that I even got a poster from a student who has learnt precious little. I can’t even begin to imagine how much effort she put into this. They don’t look like much, but I’m infinitely proud of my little ones and their first attempt! Enjoy!

Reboot
Is it that time of the year already? I sit behind my desk trying to figure out logistics… How much of what I had constantly put off during the year did I actually get done during the summer? Did I clear out all my drawers, did I organize my material, do I have unfinished business from last year? Have I rested enough, am I ready to believe that this year will be different and I’ll do everything better? Do I have enough to give, will I make it through another year?
We’re back at our posts as of tomorrow and, like every single year since I started teaching, I get that familiar feeling in my lower belly. I’m anxious! No, I don’t feel ready at all. I don’t feel adequately prepared to deal with everything that’s new this year, and, frankly, I don’t think I’ll ever be. There’s absolutely no guarantee that I won’t be making the same mistakes. There’s no logical reason why things will turn out different this year.
So, as always, I ask myself: How can you keep doing this? How can one deal with all these expectations, year after year? I have yet to meet a teacher who stood at the end of the school year, smiled inwardly and said: “Yes. This year, I did it all. I’m satisfied.” The truth is, most of us get harder on ourselves with each passing year. Because more experience means less excuses. And because the list of what we’ve done wrong keeps growing. And we grow older and less able to deal with disappointments and further away from our students’ experiences and a tiny bit more tired… You know, summer is blessed, it’s catharsis, it’s an absolute prerequisite. But as you get older, there’s a bit more residue left behind, your mental and emotional cleaning gear gets a bit more rusty and then it’s September 1st, sneaking up on you, catching you off guard.
Does this mean I’m not happy to be starting again tomorrow? Don’t be ridiculous, I’m thrilled! I’m only human. And that means I never learn. So I know I will lay awake tonight filled with anticipation. I won’t be able to stop smiling tomorrow morning when the corridors are reverberating with those familiar high-pitched cries. And by morning, I will have believed it: It’s going to be different this year.
Goodbye…
In a few days, I will be saying goodbye to yet another amazing class who I’ve shared hundreds of mornings and experiences with. Smart, talented little people who I met three years ago and who I watched grow to what they are today. Saying goodbye is maybe one of the hardest parts of this job.
Being a teacher means devoting time and energy to preparing sturdy ships only to let them sail away. We talk about everything else so often… Discipline issues, pedagogy, methods, class management, materials, compensation. I don’t think there’s enough talk about goodbyes. Probably because we don’t really like to talk about it.
However, a major part of this job is teaching your students how to be okay without you. Giving them all that’s necessary to leave school behind and find out their own place in the world. This is clearer with older kids who leave school having made major decisions and having taken big exams. But younger students leave school at that precise point that separates childhood from adolescence. That is maybe the biggest change they will ever experience, physically, mentally and emotionally. As soon as they’ve left primary school, they’ll never be children again.
And you find yourself wondering… Will they be safe? Will they be happy? Will they find themselves in the sea of faces? Will they be ok? It doesn’t matter. It isn’t your business anymore. All you can do is hope you’ve done your job properly. Taught them to appreciate themselves in order to demand respect from others. And that knowledge is a journey without destination. And that they should never stop trying and fighting for the best.
This is a small sample of what they gave me over the course of three years. Just a tiny wedge of their talent and powers of creativity. I can’t show you their hidden songs, their tears of joy and pain, their struggles with acceptance, their sense of belonging, all their great achievements and that mystical look in their eyes everytime we climbed a new mountain and they realised a new truth about themselves. Those are just for me. I am sorry. I am just that lucky. I’m a teacher.
A summer’s day – 3rd grade
You can never know what will happen when you ask your students to do the simplest thing. This wasn’t supposed to be anything noteworthy. It was just a way to recap the unit and express visually what we have learnt about seasons and the weather.
But… when they came back with these, it was impossible for me to let them go. I cut them, scanned them and here they are. This is just the simplest way of presenting them, but they can be used in a great variety of ways. As background images for a song (we’re actually planning to do a cover of The Season Song by Pancake Manor), as artwork in a collage or a poetry collection with student’s poems about the summer, and many many more ideas that we always have and never get to realize!
Anyway, I deemed them too beautiful to be wasted in a workbook. I hope you enjoy them.
