Worksheet  2

The Obesity Epidemic

The world needs to tackle the growing epidemic of obesity with the same sense of global urgency as climate change.

Obesity rates in Britain are soaring with nearly a quarter of adults now classed as clinically obese. Despite Government warnings that we are turning into a nation of couch potatoes and risking obesity-related illnesses such as heart disease and cancer, our waistlines keep growing. But what can be done to tackle the obesity health timebomb? We take a look at the statistics, the causes and what we need to do as a nation to fight the flab.

What is obesity?

A person is classed as obese when their weight has increased to a point where it seriously endangers their health. Obesity is diagnosed when a person’s Body Mass Index (BMI) exceeds 30. BMI is calculated by dividing weight in kilogrammes by height in metres squared. Use our health calculator to work out your BMI

There is far less time invested in advertising foods that are actually good for us. Advertising of fruits and vegetables is almost non-existent.  Most of the food ads children and teens see on television are for foods that nutritionists and government agencies argue should be consumed either in moderation, occasionally, or in small portions.

This is where the food industry begins throwing around the term “personal responsibility.” Big companies and corporations are quick to defend their position, asking questions like “Are we to blame for merely providing people with what they want?” Food advertisers believe that since they are not forcing anyone to purchase what they offer; they are not responsible for the consequences.

While there are many contributing factors to obesity, such as over-eating, poor food choices, genetic disposition, and lack of exercise, the problem goes far beyond individual behavior.  We cannot focus on fast food alone; we must look at the food industry as a whole.  The food industry can make a significant contribution to reduce obesity by cutting back on sugary or fattening products, offering healthier choices, becoming more transparent with nutritional information, and ending false or misleading advertising. Perhaps then we can move towards being a healthier nation.

1 tackle A He is a man of ………………..honesty.
2 urgency B People of a nervous……………….tend to be rather argumentative.
3 soar C Most advertisements use a subtle approach aiming at …………….the consumers into buying unnecessary things.
4 flabby D The attack added a new ………………….to the peace talks.
5 disposition E Unemployment has …………………to 30% in Greece.
6 transparent F Women are obsessed with their ……………thighs and would go to great lengths to get rid of them.
7 misleading G The government is determined to…………………..inflation.
