Carnival : means abstinence from meat – it prepares people mentally and physically for the season of Easter and the Resurrection. In Latin it is identified with carnival, as this word comes from carne, meaning “meat”, and the verb vale, meaning “to pass”. The period of Carnival is considered par excellence as a period of relaxation, a period in which people escape from their everyday life and externalize their passions with the help of disguise. In the past, the carnival took place everywhere in Greece with group masquerades, dances, feasts, satire and various special customs in each place. It was an opportunity for spree, wine and a thousand and two teasing. The biggest centers of carnival revelry were, as they are today, Patras with the infamous town carnival, which has its roots in the early 19th century, Plaka in Athens, Thebes with the famous “Vlach wedding”, Kozani with the beautiful its lanterns, open-air feasts around bonfires in its various neighborhoods.
