CLIMATE DETECTIVES 2025 – GENERAL LYCEUM LIMENA THASSOS

THASSOS

PROJECT TITLE: “Thassos: The Emerald Island  from a Space View “

Our school, General Lyceum of Limena Thassos, is actively engaged in the Climate Detectives 2025 Program, an initiative by The European Space Agency (ESA) coordinated by Esero Greece. This program challenges students to contribute to research and conservation efforts for Earth’s environment and climate.

Our team project is recognized in the top 10 of the best Greek projects submitted to this year’s Climate Detectives 2024-2025.

Our student team, “ The Emerald Island Explorers “, worked together into studying the way the unique combination of vegetation and coastal ecosystems contributes to Thassos’s identity as the ‘Emerald Island,’ and what are the implications for its environmental sustainability and tourism development. To facilitate our research, we used satellite imagery from sensors on satellite Sentinel 2 accessed through the EO Browser online platform.

Furthermore, we produced a descriptive video to articulate, analyze, and showcase our findings, which is uploaded on youtube.

Additionally, we gathered geographical information on ground motion, land cover and its changes from Copernicus Land Monitoring Service (CLMS), we designed 3D designs and printed.

To concentrate all our study on the environmental characteristics captured by the images of the corresponding indicators of the satellite data, we created a blog called e-Thassos_mas, to provide the description of each indicator, the images of the years 2016 and 2024 used for comparison, the observations and the results. Information and images from Copernicus EU website, are also used to derive results.

The satellite indices provide valuable insights into environmental monitoring, aiding in disaster response and environmental planning. Understanding these patterns is essential for mitigating future risks and ensuring sustainable land management.

The recovery of the island, as observed through Sentinel-2 L2A, showcases the importance of satellite monitoring in understanding wildfire impacts and ecosystem restoration and our suggestion for actions were created on a poster, posted on the blog.
