Before the eclection he was a member of ANC (African National Congress). He was inprisoned for 27 years by the regime of the white people. His release in 1990, marked the beginnings of profound changes in the African state, which led to the fall of the racist regime.

Manos Hatzidakis was a famous Greek composer and theorist of Greek music.He was born in Xanthi, in 1925. His first work was the tune for the song «Paper Moon» («Χάρτινο το Φεγγαράκι»). Because his parents were divorced, he was forced to work from a young age. Ιn 1961, he won the Oscar for Best Song, with his song »The children of Piraeus» (»Τα Παιδιά του Πειραιά»). He died in Athens,on 15 June 1994, aged 68.
