Duration of the learning process: 4 hours
The purpose of this activity is to encourage students to learn English through
debating. They have to plan, prepare for and carry out a debate.
The teacher will introduce students to debating. Then, students will have to work in groups to conduct research and use their research findings in their debate speech. The following learning objectives should be achieved after completing all of the exercises.
- To be able to understand the rules of a debate
- To be able to develop the skills for debating
- To be able to know how to prepare for a debate
- To be able to cooperate with others in planning, preparing and carrying out a debate

- Is animal testing a justified operation?
- Is death penalty appropriate or should it be banned?
- Should cell phone be used in class?
- Should laptop computers be allowed in class?
- Is global warming really an issue?
- What impact does social networking have on society?
- Is the practice of euthanasia justified?
- Are violent video games appropriate for children?
- Is cloning humans or animals ethical?
- Do celebrities get away with more crime?
- Is developing nuclear energy for commercial use justified?
- Is censoring the media effective?
- Are social networking sites harmful?
- Should we stop space exploration?
- Is peer pressure beneficial or harmful?
