This is what I believe about self-reliance.

Five years ago the economic crisis struck my country, Greece. My family and I used to live in a huge comfortable house in Piraeus. We had everything we wanted, all the comforts a family would ever be able to have. We used to live in a detached house. I personally had everything I wanted and asked for. We used to have two cars and travel a lot abroad. Generally, our life was enviable!
But all these changed abruptly in a way that we could not even imagine. One day my mother returned from her job earlier than usual feeling very sad and the reason was that the company she was working for, was about to go bankrupt so all employees had to be fired, including my mother. After that, everything changed to the worse. My father’s salary was reduced so it started being difficult for my family to make ends meet. The best solution for the time was to move back to my parents’ hometown, Lefkada, somewhere in the Ionian Sea, in order to start from scratch.
When we got there, we had to face a lot of unforeseen problems. For example, we needed to find a new house to rent while my parents had to find a new job to earn our living. My father eventually found a job although it was not what he had expected. The income was very low and it was not enough for us, so my mother had to find a second job. It was very difficult for me, too. I had to adjust to a totally new environment, with no friends, or any activities as the ones I used to do. As a result I was feeling depressed and helpless.
It has been about three years since the day we had to start our lives from the beginning but things are not that bad anymore.We have managed to stay united against all odds and we have learned to appreciate what we have, even when this is much less. We don’t need two cars or a huge house with separate bedrooms for me and my sister. What we do need is the basics and our family staying together facing problems and finding solutions. In times of trouble what really matters is to rely on the power we have inside us and be self-sufficient.
THIS IS WHY I BELIEVE IN SELF- RELIANCE!
