STRAY DOGS΄ SOCIETY
STRAY: To move away aimlessly from a group or from the right course or place.
Stray dogs moving aimlessly around rubbish bins in search of food, a very common sight in our hometown, Lefkada.
What is the reason for the increasing number of stray dogs?
Owners desert them, maybe because taking care of them costs money or takes a lot of precious time! So, the consequences of such unconscious actions ……
……… are hungry, sick, scared or at times even aggressive dogs being left out in the streets, posing a threat to the residents΄ health and safety! What do we do about this? Is this a solution?
DEFINITELY NOT! Take action NOW!
Feeding them IS surely something, but is it enough? Help the Animal Welfare Society of our town. Think carefully before adopting a dog!
This is the life your pet deserves! Show them your love and you will get their unconditional love in return!!!
(Re-writing the story)
Hi everyone! I would like to write a true two-part story, that highlights the huge cultural differences on the stray dogs issue, in our country and abroad.
Summer 2013. Aghios Ioannis area. My Italian guest arrives for his planned holidays with his wife and a great looking large body Labrador. During his stay at my complex, a baby dog appears in our garden. Looks neglected, hungry but cute, charming and healthy also. Gianfranco, decides to take the puppy to the veterinarian for a check. I could never imagine that he would also issue an ID for the puppy as well as a passport to take it back with him to Milan, Italy! So it happened! As we speak, the puppy is in Italy, enjoying good care and great hospitality.
Second part of the story: Two weeks after Gianfranco’s departure, another female dog appears in our garden! She wears a collar, looks healthy and beautiful. I immediately take a couple of pictures of the dog and print some “FOUND” posters with my phone number on them and hanged them all over the Aghios Ioannis area, as well as some big traffic areas around. I expected that the owner of the dog would give me a call, asking for her. Surprisingly, after a weeks time, I received no call at all. What have happened? I concluded that the owners left the dog on purpose! There is no other explanation (to my logic at least).
Conclusion(s): Differences in education and culture on the specific issue of stray dogs are the key factors that determine behaviours. There is no concrete policy on the issue of stray dogs at the regional/governmental level. Private initiative prevails, in other words: god save the queen!
My experience from the “ATHENS 2004” Olympic Games, is that stray dogs was a big issue and a great challenge to face. The Organising Committee (happened to be a part of it) took specific measures in order to eliminate the problem and to provide dog-friendly shelter to the poor animals. But unfortunately, this was effectiveenforced only for a limited period of time, during the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Final conclusion: Greeks are capable for everything, but they do not learn from the past. Olympic legacy is just history in our days.

Merci
