Seize The Day

Hello there! Here?s another blog and it?s mine!!! While I was creating it, I wasn?t really sure what it would be about but soon enough I decided it would have to do with my profession. I teach English at an Evening Vocational High School somewhere in Greece. I have been working there for the last 6 years but I have been teaching since 1990 in private language centers and other state schools. I really feel that I?m lucky enough to have made a good professional choice because I have been working ever since I graduated from University, so I guess I managed to depend on my self pretty soon.

I remember how passionate and enthusiastic I was with my first classes. I still remember my first pupils? faces. I still hear my trembling voice when I introduced myself. I still remember the jokes I told them, the songs I taught them, the drawings we made together, the activities I used to teach them their first words, how I helped them form their first letters in English.

Over the years I have learnt to love this job. I have used so many coursebooks, cassettes, videos, teacher?s resource packs, activities, magazine and newspaper extracts, songs, poems, advertisements, anything that would help my students acquire real, authentic speech. Meaningwhile, I had to help the more advanced students prepare for their certificate exams and our lessons had to be exam-oriented, dealing with endless lists of new words, idioms, phrasal verbs, grammar points and structural functions. However, I always allowed scope for something creative, intriguing, relaxing that would draw their attention and let them have fun while learning at the same time.

I have realised how creative, imaginative and updated a foreign language teacher should be. Always hardworking and enthusiastic, organised and well-prepared. Otherwise your students will have lost their interest and  you will be standing in front of an undisciplined audience that will definitely give you a hard time.
