Α. READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIΟNS

The tropical rain forests of the world play important roles in our daily lives. They help to recycle water and oxygen, and control air pollution around the world. Tropical rainforest plants provide 25% of the medicine in the world. The forest is also home to many different tribes. The Yanomami tribe lives in the rainforests of Brazil and Venezuela. The people in the tribe need the forests to hunt for their food and a place to build their huts to live in. They don’t wear shoes and have tough skin on their feet. Sadly, the tribes are disappearing because of the terrible destruction of their homes and natural habitats by companies that are cutting down trees to make roads and to use the wood for paper and other products. In some countries children are writing letters to their governments to ask them to stop the companies who are destroying the rainforests. To help raise money, children buy and sell beads and necklaces that the tribes make.

Α. READ THE PASSAGE AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS.

Halloween is an annual celebration originally called ‘’All Hallows Eve’’ which means the evening before All Saints Day. Hallow is an old English word for Saint. Over the years, people joined the two words together to make the name Halloween. One story says the Celts thought that dead friends would return with their souls in the body of a black cat. This has remained the symbol of Halloween to the present day. In the dead of night, villagers would collect food to donate to their favourite God. They would take it to a bonfire on top of a local hill, eat and dance. After that the people were nervous about walking home in the dark, so they carved faces in their candle holders which they made from huge orange pumpkins. They hoped that the light of their candle would frighten the spirits away.

Education…

According to the results of a survey released yesterday, education costs Greek households 4.3 billion euros a year, and this figure may well be higher if the cost of private tuition classes is included as well. Research carried out in the year 2005 showed that many families have to take out loans to put their children through school and to help them pass university entrance exams. This is because parents believe that their children should receive more education than that which they are receiving in school. So, they send their children for afternoon or evening classes in private institutes or have a tutor at home. The largest amount of the money spent on education (1.44 billion euros) goes to pay for students preparing for university exams. Just over 1 billion is spent on housing and food costs for students attending universities away from home. Another 342 million covers tuition fees in private colleges, and another 134 million for extra classes while students are still in secondary school. What is even more disturbing is that this figure would be higher if families were to declare the full amount they spend. And this is not all! It is also reported that families spend 804 million euros a year on their children when they are still in primary school and another 284 million on childcare. This is a lot of money spent in a country which has aimed to provide free education for all. And the question some parents ask is: “Is it really worth it? Will our children find a good job in the future?” While we can say that education is an end in itself, and a really good education will result in professional success, it is also true that young people and their parents worry about the future.
