On Wednesday 3rd December our class went to watch an adaptation of Bertolt Brecht’s play The Caucasian Chalk Circle.
To begin with, the plot was awfully difficult to understand. As a result, we left the theatre confused.
On the other hand, we could see that there was a basic message to be conveyed in the end; that a mother is someone who raises you, not just gives birth to you. But still, the acting was horrible and the actors didn’t appear to have any experience at all. They also seemed to have little chemistry uniting them as a group and we believe that this was one of the reasons why the play didn’t come out well.
In our view, it was a performance only for audiences between the ages of 6 – 12 years old.
2. Review by Stephen Potolias, Nikos Polychronidis, Konstantinos Petritsis, George Sioutas – class B5
On 3rd December our class went to the theatre to watch an adaptation of the play The Caucasian Chalk Circle. The play was written by Bertolt Brecht but it was adapted for kids.
We have to say that it was astonishingly boring. The dialogues were too simplistic and the actors were, oddly enough, too enthusiastic addressing an audience that didn’t pay any attention because of extreme boredom.
We were amazed by the final statement of their modified play saying ‘If you didn’t like the play we’ll come back with a better one’! If only they could!
Let’s just say that the play was wonderful for the primary school students. The young ones seemed to have enjoyed it a lot.
However, it’s definitely not recommended for people at our age, unless you feel like a ten-year old.
3. Review by Lydia Savvidou, Helen Stavroglou, Helen Plati, Dimitra Petrocheilou – class B5
On Wednesday 3rd December 2014 our class went to the local amphitheatre to watch an adaptation of the well-known play by Bertolt Brecht The Caucasian Chalk Circle.
The story was about a child that was abandoned by its royal family because of a war which suddenly broke out inside the kingdom. The kid was taken by a woman of a lower social status who went through many hardships in order to protect it and raise it as her own. In the end, the two mothers fought for the legal custody of the little boy. The winner was the one who proved her pure motherly feelings towards the kid.
Although the story is interesting, the play was a disaster. The performance and the group’s disappointing acting skills failed to convey any deeper messages than that of the basic storyline. As a result we were forced to watch a play that made us bored from the beginning.
We sadly regretted the fact that we chose this over doing something more enjoyable and meaningful.
