During my recent trip to Greece while on Long Service Leave, I had the pleasure of visiting Voula High School (1^ο Γυμνάσιο Βούλας), in Athens.

My Year 8 Advanced Greek class has been working on the program “Building Bridges Across Continents” with this school over the last year. The program allows our students to get to know students of their own age from Greece, to share thoughts and experiences, to express themselves in Greek and to enrich their knowledge of the Greek culture. This is done through emails, PowerPoint presentations, videos, oral presentations and, in the coming weeks, via a Skype call.

I was thrilled to be welcomed by the Principal Ms Maria Kaskadami, Assistant Principal Ms Ioanna Gardiki and English teacher Ms Angeliki Methodiou at the High School, who are all involved in the program. I was also introduced to other staff.  The highlight of my visit was meeting the students who have been corresponding with my Year 8 class. After addressing the students, they had the opportunity to ask many questions about our school, life in Australia and whether our students will visit them so they can meet in person. They were very pleased to hear that a visit is planned during next year’s Gateways program!

After I presented them with a signed soft toy from our students, I was given printed t-shirts for my class as a gesture of friendship.  Their warmth and generosity touched me greatly. I look forward to visiting Voula High School next year with our students as part of the Gateways program.
