Beltane festival is held on the 1st of May, or rather starts on the night of the previous day. It is associated with fertility and rituals were performed to protect the cattle, crops and people. The name means ‘fire of Bel’ -Belinus being one name for the Sun God.

These gatherings were accompanied by a feast and special bonfires were kindled, too. Doors, windows, cattle were decorated with yellow May flowers. The Maypole was a focal point of the English village rituals as well.
