Skint as ever, British composer and music critic Peter Warlock composed this carol to raise some money. He needed it to celebrate Christmas Eve with an “immortal carouse” (that’s a pub-crawl to you and me), with his old friend the poet Bruce Blunt. The Daily Telegraph rode to the rescue, by giving the piece first prize in its annual carol competition.
