Christmas is a very important holy day in Bulgaria! It’s also very family-centred. On Christmas Eve everyone gather at the house of the oldest grandparent for a big festive dinner. The meals have to be odd number, seven at least, and all vegetarian. The dinner starts with a typical Bulgarian custom. The oldest person breaks off pieces of the round homemade bread in which a coin was placed before it was baked. Whoever gets the piece with the coin will become wealthy and very lucky throughout the New Year!

BACK TO CHRISTMAS EVE TRADITIONS !
Our 3rd graders gave a fabulous performance reviving Bulgarian Christmas customs. Parents took an active part in it!

Survachka – a symbol of health, longevity and prosperity! An expression of diligence and holiday mood!
It’s made of a branch of a cornell tree. The decoration is highly varied – seeds, wool, walnuts, ring-shaped buns, apples, raisins, prunes, dried peppers, beans, strings of popcorn.

The Survakari «bring kind tidings»-say wishes for health and wealth while tapping both the young and the old.
And bless them: «Surva, vesela godina! Do godina, do amina!»
That means: » Happy, healthy and Merry New Year! God bless you till next year and forever!»
