David Crystal is the foremost writer and lecturer on the English language with a worldwide reputation. He is honorary professor of linguistics at the University of Wales, Bangor. Crystal has published several books for the general reader about linguistics and the English language. What has made him successful is his ability to make language issues comprehensible to the general reader by presenting them in a reader and listener friendly manner.

In his 2004 book The Stories of English, a general history of the English language, he describes the value he sees in linguistic diversity and the according of respect to non-standard varieties of English. He is an advocate of a new field of study, Internet Linguistics. His views on how the Internet has changed language can be found here.

Crystal  suggests that the inherent characteristics of English have not greatly contributed to its status as a world language. On the contrary, the status of English as a world language has more to do with historical factors than any inherent linguistic qualities of the language.
