How much do we know about Halloween?

  • It is a holiday celebrated on the night of October 31.
  • The word Halloween is a shortening of “All Hallows’ Eve”, the eve of All Hallows’ Day. “Hallow” is an Old English word for “holy person” and All Hallows’ Day is simply another name for All Saints Day.
  • Halloween has its origins in an ancient Celtic festival. People believed that on October 31, the spirits of the dead would visit the earth. They worried that evil spirits would cause problems or hurt them. So on that night people wore costumes that looked like ghosts or other evil creatures. They thought if they dressed like that, the spirits would think they were also dead and not harm them. In Christian times, it became a celebration of the evening before All Saints’ Day.
  • Halloween is very popular in the USA, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada and many other countries.
  • Traditional activities include trick-or-treating, bonfires, costume parties, visiting “haunted houses”, reading scary stories about witches, watching horror movies and carving Jack-o-lanterns.
  • Halloween costumes are related to ghosts, skeletons, witches and devils. Black and orange are the famous colours of that day. Bats, black cats and spiders are often connected with this holiday.
