“There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.”
Henry James

Afternoon tea, that most quintessential of English customs is, perhaps surprisingly, a relatively new tradition. Whilst the custom of drinking tea dates back to the third millennium BC in China and was popularised in England during the 1660s by King Charles II and his wife the Portuguese Infanta Catherine de Braganza, it was not until the mid 19th century that the concept of ‘afternoon tea’ first appeared.

Afternoon tea was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the year 1840. The Duchess would become hungry around four o’clock in the afternoon. The evening meal in her household was served fashionably late at eight o’clock, thus leaving a long period of time between lunch and dinner. The Duchess asked that a tray of tea, bread and butter (some time earlier, the Earl of Sandwich had had the idea of putting a filling between two slices of bread) and cake be brought to her room during the late afternoon. This became a habit of hers and she began inviting friends to join her.

This pause for tea became a fashionable social event. During the 1880’s upper-class and society women would change into long gowns, gloves and hats for their afternoon tea which was usually served in the drawing room between four and five o’clock.

 Christmas in England

In England, children do not get their presents on Christmas Eve, 24th of December. Father Christmas comes at night when everyone is asleep. His reindeer can fly and takes him from house to house to deliver all the gifts. They land on the roofs of the houses and then Father Christmas climbs down the chimney to leave the presents under the Christmas tree. In the morning of Christmas Day the 25th of December, children usually get up very early to unwrap their presents. Then they have plenty of time to play with their new toys. Christmas dinner is served in the early afternoon. Most people eat turkey, sprouts and loads of other vegetables, not forgetting Christmas pudding. The 26th of December is called Boxing Day.

The build up to Christmas is a time when schools are filled with the sound of music. If it’s not carols being sung merrily on high then it’s winter favourites belted out at assemblies and shows. There’s no better way to begin the chilly season.

Application and Evaluation of Differentiated Vocabulary Instruction in an EFL Greek Primary School Context

Despina Evgeni, Med in Teaching English as an International Language (Greek Open University)

Abstract

Differentiated instruction is an educational approach that adjusts instruction to meet the needs of every student. This is done through a combination of strategies proven effective in teaching at the student’s point of learning acquisition. Because traditional instruction tends to ‘teach to the middle’, the needs of advanced and struggling students are not always adequately addressed. This article is aimed at presenting and discussing the results of a short-scaled study on the effectiveness of differentiated instruction strategies on young learners’ achievement and motivation.

Key words: differentiated instruction, vocabulary teaching, motivation, academic acheivement
