Trivia
Clint Eastwood, Harrison Ford, Paul Newman and Robert Redford were all considered for the part of Red. In the original novella, Red is a middle-aged Irishman with graying red hair. However, Frank Darabont always had Morgan Freeman in mind for the role because of his authoritative presence, demeanor and deep voice.
Goofs
Factual errors: Brooks had been released on parole, but didn’t want to go. In reality, if a prisoner doesn’t want parole, he doesn’t even have to apply for it. In fact, he can serve out his entire sentence if he wants to.
Quotes
[first lines]
District Attorney: Mr. Dufresne, describe the confrontation you had with your wife the night that she was murdered.
Andy Dufresne: It was very bitter. She said she was glad I knew, that she hated all the sneaking around. And she said that she wanted a divorce in Reno.
