Teaching Grammar in context

If we analyse the dialogue in the following video we will find lots of linguistic clues. It’s a good idea to engage students by asking them to find and guess the meaning of the new grammatical forms and get them know how the new language is used and formed. It is better to study the meaning of the new grammatical forms before looking at the form.

Being Fair

What are ways we can show justice at our school?

Treat all people the same with honesty and respect.

Cooperate with one another

Don’t ignore others when they talk

Include others in games and activities.

Respect the uniqueness and value of everyone.

Make sure others are not treated badly.

For a simple book to understand fairness, there is the Little Red Hen by Paul Galdone. This tale teaches readers that we reap what we sow. The little red hen lives in a house with a cat, a dog, and a mouse. The hen asks the other animals to help her plant some wheat, water it, cut it, take it to the mill to be ground into flour but they all refuse. They won’t even help bake a cake.  But they want to eat it when the cake is ready.  Is it fair that they get to eat the cake if they didn’t help do the work?

IClick, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin, the cows have joined together to ask the farmer about some things they feel are unjust. They use a typewriter to leave Farmer Brown notes to communicate with him.

Faux Flipped Classroom

When students don’t have access to the internet at home the Faux Flipped Classroom model can take place. We still have the use of online instruction, but it’s done in the classroom not at home.

Diversity

                        Embrace Diversity

Children may have questions about differences in appearance like the color of someone’s skin or cultural habits and customs some people have and look different from others. Students have friends and classmates who come from various ethnic or racial backgrounds. Teachers and parents have to emphasize the value of racial and cultural diversity, helping children understand that diversity is what makes our world so special and that coming in contact with other people from around the world offers kids a broader view of the world.

It is important to learn to appreciate all kinds of differences, not only racial and cultural. Children should learn to treat everyone with kindness.

Teachers have to create a safe place for all the students where all of them are unique rather than different.

Creativity

Some children enjoy colouring in. Others do not.

If a child enjoys colouring inside the lines and is good at it, great!

Colouring outside the lines? No problem… There are other, more creative activities that give children the chance to learn pencil control.

Personally I believe it is much more interesting have them do a free painting, create their own pictures. Art can be a natural way for children to express themselves and communicate their feelings.

The Tree Of Seasons

                                        Autumn

20211114 093645

During the autumn the leaves turn yellow and brown. With all the wet and windy weather leaves fall to the ground. In a few days trees will be bare. When there’s less sunlight, deciduous trees do not produce chlorophyll, which they use to convert light into energy to grow. Chlorophyll is the pigment that gives leaves their green colour. The tree without the leaves needs less water and energy to stay alive during the Winter. The fallen leaves add nutrients to the soil.

November is the eleventh month of the year. Most leaves have fallen

off trees. It’s time to celebrate, especially as the days get shorter and the
