Dyslexia is the most common  learning difficulty.   Most people believe that it is characterized only by difficulty with learning to read, despite normal or above-average intelligence.  However, there are other forms of dyslexia which are not as well known. Lack of, difficulties in phonological decoding, processing speed, orhographic coding  and rapid naming are some other forms of the same learning difficulty which most people fail to recognize.

What parents can do to help?

Dealing with dyslexia  can present a challenge both for your child and you. However with the proper support, almost all people with dyslexia can become accurate readers. You may help considerably if you:

  •  Read out loudly every day. Provide a variety of reading material such as comic books,    mystery stories, recipes and articles on sports or pop stars.
  • Use audiobooks. Listening to a book while looking at the words can help your child learn to connect the sounds she’s hearing to the words she’s seeing.
  • Look for apps and other high-tech help. Word processors and spell-check can help kids who have trouble with reading and spelling.
  • Focus on effort, not outcome. Praise your child for trying hard, and emphasize that everyone makes mistakes—you included!   video
